What is FUT Hair Transplant?
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) also known as strip hair transplant surgery. A continuous strip of hair is removed from the donor region of the scalp and implanted in the recipient region by the Hair transplant Surgeon. Under a stereo microscope, the strip containing hair follicles is dissected and separated into grafts of 1-3 follicular grafts. These grafts are then inserted into incisions in the recipient’s skin.
FUT can take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours depending on the size of the region to be treated and the quantity of grafts that need to be implanted.
Procedure for FUT hair transplant

- The surgeon removes a section of your scalp, generally from the back of your head, with a knife. Typically, the size of the strip is 6 to 10 inches long, however it can also run from ear to ear, in some cases.
- Stitches are used to close the wound where the scalp was cut off.
- With a knife, the hair transplant surgeon and their helpers cut the scalp strip into smaller pieces. They will split the piece into as many as 2,000 smaller bits which are known as grafts.
- The surgeon starts cutting tiny holes on your scalp with a needle or blade, where the they will transplant the hair later.
- Hairs from the scalp removed are inserted or grafted into the puncture holes by the surgeon.
- Bandages or gauze are used next to cover the surgery wounds.
Recovery Time and Cost of FUT Hair Transplant
The transplanted hair will fall out around 6-9 weeks after surgery. New hair will grow in its place. After 8-12 months, you will see substantial hair growth.
There may be some numbness around the donor site for a few months, but it will go away. After a FUT hair transplant, it usually takes around a year to see satisfactory results. After your FUT surgery, it’s advised to take a week off before returning to work.
